“It wouldn’t be long until he joined the ‘rats’ trapped in their chaotic mazes.” - says Tarek Refaat, Author of “BrokenShadows

From a young age, Tarek Refaat, my author friend from Cairo - Egypt, has been fond of writing. He firmly believed that every book is essence of the author. In his latest book “Broken Shadows” he is trying to discover uncharted territory - an adventure, an attempt to discover a new genre and writing style. As I discussed with him, he agrees like most of the authors, he is also into writing for his personal satisfaction but even more than that he inclines more towards his aesthetic enthusiasm. He says that criticism of his work does not stop him from writing but go back to it and see what made the particular person to say so. He says his writing has evolved due to these reviews and looking back.

Tarek does not write at a specific spot for due to the nature of his work (IT) as well as regular day-to-day responsibilities, but then he does begin to write whenever he is inspired. He says that last time the muse appeared on his flight back from Morocco.

BRIEF NOTE ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Tarek Refaat, an Egyptian author who’s life was split between Egypt and Saudi Arabia until the age of 22, who works in the Information Technology domain, began his writing career with the launch of his first book back in 2011 “Ruptured” which was published via Egyptian publishing house ‘Shabab Books’. Tarek’s books mainly evolved around female antagonists and that’s not quite the norm, especially that Ruptured tackled the issue of rape even though from a different angle than the usual. Tarek then self-published his second book “Ribbons & Heels” in 2013, which was about 4 women who each journeys through her own set of circumstances. Tarek Has recently published "Broken Shadows" via Red Sands publishing. Currently he has another project WIP and is aiming to finish it by end of 2017.

INSPIRATIONS
From a very young age as a child, Tarek has been fond of writing.

“The sheer capacity to put my thoughts down into words fascinated me and has always been a drive, I believe I have a story to tell and that I hope it will bring readers some sort of joy in reading my work.” - Tarek Refaat

CHALLENGES
‘Broken Shadows’ was a completely different genre to which he was not familiar so trying to find the right words and trying to find the right descriptions was quite a challenge for him.

QUOTES FROM THE BOOK
“Would he still love me if he were to know I’m a spy?” - this part of the story was quite important, how is it possible for a regular person to try to absorb that their lover is a spy! That moment where Heidi asks herself this question to which she has no answer.

“Get myself together? How would you feel if you were in my shoes?” I was being shot at in my home. Now we’re being chased by two choppers while in a running car, and all we have is a freaking pistol you say you’ll take care of them with. How am I not supposed to freak out?” – This part really got to me while it seems silly but the fact of imagining the regular civilian who has no expertise what so ever, specially being a man, which is not quite the nature, seeing the roles switched was quite intriguing for me.

“So . . .” Ashraf said. “This is my opportunity to do everything I ever wanted to do to you. You have nowhere to go, dear. It’s just you and me. And my men, of course.”  - It reflected the darkness inside Ashraf and his desire to destroy Heidi

Broken hearts and dark shadows, will love ever find its way back to them? Fifteen years ago, Heidi Aasar fled the country, hoping to make sense of the chaos that surrounded her. A burned ex-operative, she refuses to continue hiding in the shadows. She now has the chance to right the wrongs of her dark past. Determined to find a way to redeem herself, she must first fix the loose threads she left behind so long ago. A successful business owner, Nadim Mohamed Sharaf has done his best to move on after his heart was broken fifteen years ago. In his mind, he has everything he could ever want or need at his fingertips. Until the moment Heidi makes a sudden reappearance in his life. It’s then everything around him changes. A chain reaction of events soon turns Nadim and Heidi’s lives upside-down. Forced to confront the turmoil brewing between them, they must put aside their differences if they are to survive another day. The choices they’ll have to make will define the outcome of the lives they lead. Will they be able to overcome their painful and chaotic past? Or will the pain and heartache consume them in the long run?
